Press Release
Two Historical Books, 'No Retreat' and 'Goodbye Old Chap', acquired by Peakpublish Peakpublish has acquired world rights for two books of historical and timely relevance as we approach the 70th Anniversary of the beginning of WW2, 'Goodbye Old Chap' by Philip Algar and 'No Retreat:A Story of Loyalty, Courage and Dunkirk' by Chris Coley. 'Goodbye Old Chap' by Philip Algar is the story of Stanley Algar, (1899-1992), a captain on an oil tanker. He led a remarkable life and fortunately kept diaries meticulously, and, whilst a prisoner of war for many years, a war log. His diaries include a graphic and moving account of his liberation and his return to England to his family and a five year old son he had never seen. Philip, his son, a professional writer and author, has used his father's writings judiciously and added much social, economic and political research to provide a background to his father’s life and times and fascinating details of a dramatic century that is already fleeing into history. 'No Retreat:A Story of Loyalty, Courage and Dunkirk' by Chris Coley is the story of Wallace Moxon who was killed defending the beaches of Dunkirk from the advancing German armies. His son, the author's father-in-law, had kept a notebook in which Lance Corporal Moxon had recorded the final orders he was to carry out in leading a squad of young soldiers.During the defence of Dunkirk Lance Corporal Wallace and his men were allocated a position and given orders not to fall back under any circumstance. In other words they were sentenced to death or capture; the most the rearguard could hope to do was delay the progress of the German troops. The story of Wallace and the men of his final command is only one of literally thousands of tales of tragedy that befell the soldiers of the British army during those days in 1940; and yet great solace could be taken from the very acts of gallantry and bravery that made possible the whole endeavour of saving the much needed fighting men and averting a total disaster. Publisher, Geraldine Rose, said, 'We are very pleased to welcome these talented authors to our list, both with stories giving an interesting insight into the lives of ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times.' About Philip Algar: Initially, Philip Algar, B.Sc. (Econ.) F.I.J. worked for multinational groups in economics and was later responsible for a large company’s media relations. Subsequently, he became an editor and writer, contributing regularly to UK and overseas publications on energy, economics and crisis management. He also contributed a regular and humorous column, on business matters, to a national newspaper and a business magazine. Philip has previously written books on management for Kogan Page, Financial Times and Matfield Books. About Chris Coley: Chris Coley was born in Birmingham. After studying Art he worked as a graphic designer before joining the teaching profession in 1994 eventually becoming the Headteacher of a secondary school. He was inspired to write his first novel, Amber Wolfe and the Shifters, by the courage and determination of his own profoundly deaf daughter. Since completing that work he has gone on to write The Daisy Chain, a murder mystery and No Retreat, the true story of a soldier at Dunkirk in 1940. |
