Author's Unique dedication to social work earns national recognition

Martin Weinbren, author of recently published King Welfare published by Jumping Fish was runner up at the annual Social Worker of the Year Awards, sponsored by Sanctuary Personnel, which took place in Bedford on Saturday 30th October.

Martin, as a social worker, has dedicated over thirty years of his career to helping children and families in need and more recently has supported fellow social workers in their role. Martin lives in Newark, Nottinghamshire and works in Birmingham for the British Association of Social Workers.

Martin qualified as a social worker in 1979 and for the majority of his career has been a children's social worker, although his experience includes working with the elderly, as well as with people who have mental health issues and physical disabilities. In his most recent work with the British Association of Social Workers Martin has used his wealth of experience to help practising social workers.

He said, "I am absolutely thrilled to have been chosen as the runner up in the Social Worker of the Year Awards, it's a great honour. I've experienced some shocking and heart breaking cases of poverty and abuse, but what has inspired me is that as a social worker you have the power and ability to do something about it, which makes it a wonderful job."

Martin's debut book 'King Welfare' was launched in September at Lincoln University. He says, "It takes some bottle to be a social worker and this book, which is the first ever realistic tale of social work in action, is quietly dedicated to the tens of thousands of social care staff nationally who need to be portrayed realistically and who do an amazing job."

The Social Worker of the Year Awards was founded by independent social worker Beverley Williams in 2006 to give greater recognition for the achievements of qualified social workers. She said: "Congratulations to Martin for his success at this year's awards. The standard of entries this year was phenomenal, so to be chosen in second place is a great achievement."

James Rook, managing director of Sanctuary Personnel, sponsors of the awards, said: "These awards are about show casing the best work in the industry and we are delighted that Martin has been recognised for his hard work and commitment to social work."

The Social Worker of the Year Awards is judged by an independent panel of senior social work practitioners. The prize giving event was attended by 300 industry representatives and took place on Saturday 30th October at the Park Inn, Bedford.
